As it couldn’t be different when it comes to Arraial do Cabo, Forno beach is simply one of the most beautiful beaches. With its blue-green waters – or blue-green – it exudes exuberance and makes you feel in another world. In some angles it is very similar to the Mexican Caribbean, not only because of the incredible hue of its waters, but also because of the cacti that emerge and stand out amidst the Atlantic Forest native to the area.
Forno beach gets its name because it radiates heat from all sides (from the sky, from the sand and from the rocks), but don’t be scared! The cold waters guarantee refreshment for everyone and a good dose of preparation will ensure that you also guarantee your shade and fresh water to enjoy the peak of the beauty of the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Whether alone, with family or friends, find out everything about this wonderful beach to ensure the best experience possible!
Why go to Forno beach?
Many tourists who pass through Arraial do Cabo end up skipping the trip to Forno beach due to its relative lack of accessibility: to get there, it is necessary to walk a trail or pay R$10 per person to go by boat, both ways leaving from Praia dos Anjos. We strongly recommend that you leave laziness aside and face the trail, which, in addition to being short and easy, offers an incredible view of both Anjos beach and our destination, Forno beach. This look would be reason enough to meet this beauty from Arraial. But of course the trail is just the beginning!
Arriving at Praia, you won’t lack reasons to justify your trip there: the contrast of the white sand with the absolutely transparent sea and in a gradient that goes from light blue to the perfect mix between aqua green and navy blue; the dense and rich native vegetation that surrounds the entire length of the beach; the coral reefs that, when seen from above and under the sunlight, have a very, very beautiful hue… in short, anyone who knows Forno beach cannot regret it.
Best Times to Visit
Everyone knows that Rio de Janeiro is a blessed place also in terms of weather, and that most of the year the sun is shining, the temperature is pleasant and the rains are never predominant. However, we can say that the best seasons to visit the Arraial do Cabo region are Spring and Autumn, as they are times of milder temperature, with less rain and less clouds than in summer.
Another very important point is to escape vacations, holidays, festive dates and even, if possible, weekends. The route to the Lagos Region is known to be a point of much congestion on the busiest dates.
With regard specifically to Praia do Forno, in times of high season, tourists will have some difficulties and inconveniences that they will not find in quieter times: The boats that make the transport and the tourist tours can be more expensive and take longer, the it can be more crowded than expected, and because there is a greater concentration of people, the tourist may even come across some rubbish thrown on the beach.
However, outside the holiday period or long holidays, Forno beauty is usually a stronghold of peace and tranquility, with the left side of the beach generally almost deserted, while the right side, where the bars are located, presents a greater concentration of people, even if nothing compared to the more accessible beaches of Arraial do Cabo.
Water Temperature
The water in the whole region of Arraial do Cabo is very cold! This is usually not a problem, as the heat is also very strong and the icy waters are what most tourists want when they are under the sun. However, the icy waters of Forno beauty hold more curiosities than we imagine!
This low temperature is largely due to the phenomenon we mentioned earlier, called upwelling. Resurgence is when, for some reason, the coldest and deepest waters of the ocean are taken to the most superficial part, bringing with it not only low temperatures, but also, and much more importantly, bringing with it a lot of diversity of living beings! Therefore, before complaining about the cold water, remember that this is why this region is so full of fish and marine animals.
Nature and Diving
Along the entire length of almost 600 meters of Praia do Forno, tourists can find fish, corals and marine animals even in the shallow part of the water. The geological formation that constitutes Praia do Forno, which is surrounded by large rocky walls covered with native Atlantic Forest, in addition to being incredibly beautiful, provides a rich marine biodiversity, a full plate for diving lovers!
But it is not just the professional and equipped diver who can observe this aquatic underworld. As we mentioned, even in the shallows the bather can see some fish, corals and even turtles! Therefore, if you don’t have a snorkel (that diving accessory with a little tube that goes from your mouth to the surface), buy it now and put it in your suitcase for the trip to Arraial do Cabo!
How to get to Forno beach
First of all, to get to Forno beach, tourists must get to Anjos beach, which is in Arraial do Cabo. Once there, there are two options: a 20-minute trail or a boat trip, which takes between 5 and 10 minutes and costs R$10 per person. In addition to offering an enchanting view of both beaches (Forno and Anjos), the trail is quite easy even for the most rusty children or adults. It is not advisable for the elderly as it contains some steep sections, but it is still considered a low difficulty trail. In any case, for those traveling alone, we recommend that you take as little weight as possible so that the journey does not become challenging, and for those traveling in a group, it is advisable to share the weight among all people.
To get to Arraial do Cabo, if you don’t have a car, you can take a direct bus to the city from the Airport or Novo Rio Bus Station, with an average cost of R$70 per trip.
Going by car, the traveler must cross the Rio-Niterói Bridge, access BR 101 and then reach Via Lagos (RJ-124). Both are great roads, however Via Lagos is privatized, which generates an additional toll cost for the driver (R$12 from Monday to Friday and R$20 on weekends).
Regardless of whether by car or bus, problems with traffic are common in this region, especially on weekends (even more so on sunny days). Normally, the trip lasts 2h30, but on the heaviest days it can take up to 7h. Therefore, plan very well to leave early or avoid the busiest traffic days.
Incredibly, there is also a small airport in Cabo Frio (CFB), which can be an alternative for travelers less concerned about money. This is a common location for charter and private flights, commercial flights being scarce and very expensive.
Bars and restaurants close by
The structure of Bars and Restaurants at Praia do Forno is somewhat limited and does not include those travelers who want to spend less. At the stalls that sell drinks and food, a meal for two people (serves up to 3, depending on appetite) costs around R$150; drinks are more modestly priced.
In these tents it is also possible to rent snorkel equipment and even take a kayak or stand-up paddle ride. For those who did not take a beach umbrella or beach chairs, the tents are also available for rent, albeit at a hefty price.
Praia do Forno also has a Floating Restaurant, which you can only get to by boat, paying R$10. It is a restaurant with a very cozy and pleasant atmosphere, with prices not much more expensive than the beach huts, but with much superior service, structure and quality.
The Floating Restaurant also offers diving sessions with turtles, and is located in a very privileged location on the sea, where the tourist can contemplate the fish and other animals passing by just below where they are.
Important detail about the Floating Restaurant: to date, cards are not accepted, with payments restricted to cash. So it’s important to remember to stop by the ATM if you plan to have lunch or spend the afternoon in this pleasant place.
Bars and restaurants in Arraial do Cabo
As Praia do Forno does not offer accommodation, it is advisable that the tourist reserve the nights to walk around Arraial do Cabo and enjoy the bohemia and food of the region. Here are some top tips for bars and restaurants in Arraial do Cabo:
Bacalhau do Tuga: Located in Praia dos Anjos, this is a place with a simple and rustic appearance, which offers, however, a refined gastronomy of the highest quality. With fresh fish caught in the region, it is one of the most traditional in Arraial do Cabo.
Saint Tropez: The Saint Tropez bar, cafe and restaurant is a great option for eating fish and seafood in general, but also for those who are strolling along the beach and decide to have a cup of coffee. In a cozy and versatile environment, the tourist will find here an option with slightly more moderate prices than the more traditional restaurants.
Restaurante Garrafa de Nansen: For those who want a more filling and popular option, without losing the charm and sophistication of Arraial do Cabo, this is a good choice. The Restaurante Garrafa de Nansen does not offer the service or the most refined dishes on the beach, but it has great value for money and is a popular spot for families and larger groups of tourists.
Nearby hotels and campsites
Praia do Forno does not offer accommodation for tourists. Despite the inconvenience of not being able to spend the night on the beach and stay as long as you want in this paradise, this is an important measure as a way of maintaining and preserving the environment and local biodiversity.
So the closest point of accommodation for the tourist who wants to know Praia do Forno is Praia dos Anjos, from where the boat that goes there departs. In Praia dos Anjos, there are many options for accommodation. Here we list some that stand out:
Among the options of hotels and inns, some are the Varandas ao Mar Hotel, with a privileged look and rooms facing the beach; Pousada dos Anjos, which is a 3-minute walk from the beach, offers great value for money, taking into account the sophistication and comfort of the accommodation; Pousada Caminho do Sol is also a well-known and traditional alternative in the area, very close to the beach and with very beautiful and cozy rooms.
But the strong point of Anjos beach in terms of accommodation are the Hostels. This is because the tourist can find dozens of them, all offering excellent quality of accommodation, service and generally satisfactory accommodation. The highlights are the Books Rehab Hostel, whose concept is therapeutic and community rest and relaxation. Very close to the beach, Books Rehab has 2 houses that receive travelers all the time; another famous hostel with a good reputation is La Casa Hostel. Despite not being in front of the beach, in less than 5 minutes walking the tourist arrives at the sand; Finally, it is worth mentioning Malai Beach House for its great service and its proximity to the sea, being on the same block as the beach.
