Let’s go over all the details about this wonder of the coast of Pernambuco. Surrounded by other wonderful beaches, nobody regrets spending a few days, weeks or months of vacation here. Check out everything you ever wanted to know about Porto de Galinhas in our complete guide:
Why visit Porto de Galinhas
Being part of the municipality of Ipojuca, Porto de Galinhas is a village with just over 4 thousand inhabitants, which sees its population double or even triple in times of high season. Why is it that Porto de Galinhas attracts so many tourists, and every year that passes it seems that the place never goes out of style?
One of the reasons is its excellent tourist infrastructure, with hotels, inns, campsites and the best of coastal cuisine. This means that even in the most crowded months, Praia de Porto de Galinhas offers services and capacity to accommodate all tourists without too many problems.
Yeah, but what brings so many people there? Its natural beauties obviously come first. What a wonderful place is Porto de Galinhas! With a strip of sand that is not very wide, however, quite extensive, it is the perfect beach for you to enjoy with your friends, going into the sea and taking a shower in the tents right after to wash off the salt from your body. By the way, here’s a tip: the tents farther from the beach entrance are cheaper and tend to be more empty, with more tables and good places available. If you want privacy, we recommend walking to the last tent.
The hospitality of the Ipojuquenses is another spectacle in itself. Always willing to help tourists and make them feel at home, the city’s economy revolves around tourism, commerce and services, and this means that the competition here is between those who best serve their customers. You will feel very well taken care of when you are attended to in local shops, hotels and inns.
Finally, Porto de Galinhas is very well located when it comes to nearby places to discover and visit. Other wonderful beaches are nearby, and you will find it incredible to pass through Maracaípe or Praia dos Carneiros before or after visiting Porto de Galinhas.
Best time to visit Porto de Galinhas
It is true that Porto de Galinhas is an interesting place to visit throughout the year, as well as the fact that the local infrastructure is capable of accommodating a large number of tourists in high season. It turns out that Porto de Galinhas, like any other famous tourist spot, is much more charming and interesting in the months when people are less frequent. That is, if you have the opportunity to visit Porto de Galinhas out of season, in the less crowded months, do it!
You will not regret.
In any case, thinking about the climate and rainfall, the whole year is favorable for visiting the beaches on the coast of Pernambuco. That’s because this part of the northeast has a fairly stable climate, with temperatures hovering around 29 degrees throughout the year, with a slight variation to more in the summer. Summer is also characterized by heavy showers of rain in the late afternoon, but that shouldn’t worry you.
In summary: sun and heat all year round, with showers of rain in the late afternoons of the peak of summer, and with a much higher frequency of tourists in the high season months: mainly December and January. Even at that time, it is possible to enjoy Porto de Galinhas without many problems, having to face just a few queues at the market, increased prices for kiosks and accommodation, and things like that.
How to get to Porto de Galinhas
As we mentioned, Porto de Galinhas is located in a municipality called Ipojuca, which is about 60 kilometers away from the capital, Recife. In other words, the best way to get there is certainly by car, with a journey of approximately one hour from Recife to Porto de Galinhas.
It is also possible, however, to take a bus from Recife to Porto de Galinhas. The buses that make this journey are lines 191 and 195 of the Expresso Vera Cruz company, leaving from the city center, passing through Boa Viagem, the airport and then heading to Porto de Galinhas. That is, if you are at the airport or in Boa Viagem, you have the option of taking this bus along the way and getting there without any mishaps.
What to do in Porto de Galinhas
There are many options for fun and leisure in Porto de Galinhas, as well as other places close by that are famous and popular tourist destinations, such as Praia dos Carneiros, which we will talk about later.
We separate the main ways to enjoy your trip in Porto de Galinhas with the best tourist tours. Check below:
Enjoy the Natural Pools of Porto de Galinhas
If you’re interested in Porto de Galinhas, you’ve probably heard of its natural pools – this being one of the main attractions of the place. It so happens that the sandbanks and the topographic formation of Porto de Galinhas beach favor the formation of dozens of natural pools that form at times when the tide is lower.
To be sure that you will be able to see the phenomenon of natural pools in Porto de Galinhas when you travel there, it is worth consulting the city’s tide table to check the best day and time to go there. This tide table can also be consulted online nowadays, but be careful, the forecast is unstable and is only safe when we talk about a few hours ahead.
Take souvenirs at the Handicraft Fair
The center of Porto de Galinhas is very charming, full of colonial buildings and narrow cobbled streets. Like every charming beach on the Brazilian coast, we find a handicraft fair here, which runs from late until late at night.
Those who like to buy souvenirs or decoration items to put at home will love the local crafts at the Porto de Galinhas fair. Ceramic pieces and sculptures of varying sizes set the tone for what you can find there.
Support the Hippocampus Project
Very close to the village of Porto de Galinhas, still in the city of Ipojuca, you can visit Projeto Hippocampus, a project for the preservation of seahorses on the coast of Porto de Galinhas. The site offers guided tours and you can listen to more explanations from veterinarians and marine biologists about the life and preservation of these very curious animals.
Discover Other Beaches in the region
We already mentioned that Porto de Galinhas is just one of the many gems that we can find along the coast of Pernambuco. If you are traveling by car, it is possible to tour several beaches in one day, or stop from beach to beach to spend a day at each location. Planning is up to you. We present to you what to find in each part of the coast:
Serrambi Beach
Located 18 minutes by car driving south from Porto de Galinhas is Praia de Serrambi. We start with it because it is one of the most deserted and least popular that you will find close to Porto. Here the cool thing is precisely the wild and untouched nature of the beach, in addition to being a coast facing the southern part of the continent, unlike Porto de Galinhas and other beaches, which face the east coast. This makes Serrambi Beach unique in many ways.
Muro Alto beach
Muro Alto is 14 minutes north of Porto de Galinhas, and unlike Serrambi, it is one of the most famous and trendy in Pernambuco. This is not for nothing, since its sea is super calm, with mild temperatures and always crystal clear. As it has a very flat and firm terrain, it is much sought after by joggers, as it offers perfect terrain for running with minimal resistance felt as you are stepping on sand.
Maracaipe Beach
Maracaípe beach is one of the closest to Porto de Galinhas and has a well-known name for those who live in the northeast region. It turns out that Maracaípe is a place for all kinds of people: from surfers to people who prefer more leisurely tourism, sitting on the sand enjoying the sun. Maracaípe is a relatively large village when compared to the other nearby beaches, and even so, its strip of sand is usually less crowded than many of the more popular beaches in that region – including, of course, Porto de Galinhas.
Pontal de Maracaipe
The point of Maracaípe is a charm in itself, a spectacle apart from the beach of Maracaípe – this is because at its point we have a dazzling encounter between fresh and salt waters. Access to this part of Maracaípe is only possible on foot or by buggy, which makes this region more peaceful and empty than the other end of the beach.
Carneiros Beach
Carneiros beach is very famous, known even worldwide for its extremely beautiful and picturesque scenery. Considered the most beautiful beach in Brazil by several guides and tourism websites, Praia dos Carneiros has everything to delight you. The only problem is that it’s a little far from Porto de Galinhas, but it’s on the way to and from Recife, for example. It’s really worth renting a Day Use at one of the resort parking lots on the beach and enjoying the whole day in Carneiros – before or after Porto de Galinhas.
Curiosity about Porto de Galinhas: Why the name?
Not everything is rosy, and the story behind the village of Porto de Galinhas is beyond dark. In fact, it is a cruel and explicit portrait of the hidden reality that we try to hide from our origins as a country.
As is public knowledge, Brazil is one of the countries that most imported slave labor from Africa. At the time when this trade was at its peak, the territory in which Porto de Galinhas is located today belonged to Puerto Rico, and it was a region of much trade and movement since the discovery of the American continent. At the same time, African slaves were transported on cargo ships along with guinea fowl, which stayed on top of the abused bodies of slaves to hide them and, thus, pass through with the “loading” without being caught.
So, half for a bad taste pun, half for secrecy and to hide slave practices, the Portuguese began to refer to this land as Porto das Galinhas, or Porto de Galinhas, a nickname that remains until today as name of the city. The saddest part is how this story today is hushed up and ignored by those who dictate the direction of tourism in the city, being almost a mockery of the history of the African people and a complete lack of consideration for the sweat and blood they dedicated to the construction across our country.
